''Things that Go Bump in the Night''

Ghosts, haints, boogers, spooks and goblins will share the spotlight when the Pickens County Museum of Art & History presents ''Things that Go Bump in the Night'' Thursday evening October 19 at the museum.

Activities get underway at 5 p.m. as author John Boyanoski of Piedmont signs copies of his recently published book ''Ghosts of Upstate South Carolina.'' He might even read one of his stories to get things started.

At 6 p.m. story teller/folk historian/musician Dean Watson of Easley will begin spinning yarns, sharing some of the most chilling ghost stories imaginable. These will vary from Mark Twain's famous story ''The Golden Arm'' to ''Spearfinger, Stone Skinned Witch of the Cherokee''.

He also will profile some very local ghosts who are said to frequent Pickens County Museum and Hagood Mill.

Watson, a member of the Pickens County Cultural Commission and panelist for the selection of the South Carolina Arts Commission's annual Jean Laney Harris State Folk Heritage Award, teaches a five-session class on regional folklore and legends through Clemson University's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and is co-founder of the Piedmont Harmony project, one of the largest folk life research programs in South Carolina.

At the close of his program Watson will provide certain ''security blanket'' procedures for children to make sure all the ''boogers and haints'' don't visit after dark.
