Leadership Anderson Class 23

"Leadership should be born out of the understanding of the needs of those who would be affected by it."

Marian Anderson

What is Leadership Anderson ?

Leadership Anderson is an opportunity to better understand our community and the challenges it faces and prepare for those challenges by meeting with, and learning from, today's leaders.  Leadership Anderson is not an action or advocate group -- it is an educational opportunity to broaden perspectives and gain increased understanding of community dynamics and public issues. Leadership Anderson is a leadership development program designed to inform a corps of committed and qualified individuals about the community—it’s past, present, and future, its problems, challenges and directions. Program participants are considered capable of fulfilling leadership positions in the Anderson area, the region, and the state. The Leadership Anderson program began in the fall of 1984, and over 500 men and women have been trained to assume positions of leadership in the community.

The Leadership Anderson program seeks to: identify select highly motivated leaders and potential leaders to participate, examine and challenge participants to respond to the needs of the community and the dynamics of social and economic change, develop an esprit de corps among the participants which will provide a common ground for working together on community needs, and create a dialogue and sense of teamwork between the participants and community leaders. Each Learning Day is designed by the Board of Regents which consists of graduates of Leadership Anderson. The Community is both our venue and our subject matter. Subject matter experts give the inside view of critical and emerging issues in a safe environment and participants explore sometimes difficult questions. Participants get to experience the region through different lenses.

We provide unrivalled and privileged access to people, places and experiences, and bring to life the complex issues facing organizations, individuals and society in the Anderson County area.  Participants discover that many of the issues they grapple with in their own organizations are relevant to all sectors. These include:

• finding and keeping good people
• functioning effectively on limited resources
• capitalizing on opportunities
• forming effective partnerships.

Together, they tackle issues with the people who carry real-life responsibility for them. And in the process, they gain new ideas and perspectives that invigorate their own organizations.

What is the program format?

Leadership Anderson begins with a two-day retreat that focuses on team building, personality, and problem solving within a society. A Board of Regents, consisting of past program participants, governs the Leadership Anderson program. It establishes a curriculum for the class and board members coordinate full-day follow-up sessions, which are held once a month after the retreat to explore issues and topics important to Anderson County. The sessions during the past few years typically have included history; economy; media; arts and culture; state and local government; health and human services; criminal justice; education and infrastructure. During the sessions, class members have an opportunity to meet community leaders in each of the areas, hear from the experts on various topics and take trips throughout the county for a first-hand look at the agencies. Leadership Anderson will begin in August with an orientation and end in June.

How much does it cost?

Tuition for Leadership Anderson is $1,250. The expense includes all costs associated with the retreat, follow-up sessions, meals, transportation, and graduation. Continuing Education Units are also available through Tri-County Technical College if needed. Scholarships are also available.
